So you’ve got a sweet ride that only comes out when the Florida sun is blazing. But what about when it’s a little colder or you just need to store it long-term? Proper storage is very important, and there’s more involved in doing it properly than simply throwing a tarp over it. Let’s go through some tips to keep your prized possession in prime condition, ready to get back t work at any time.
Location, Location, Location
Ideally, you want a dry, secure spot out of direct sunlight. A garage is perfect for this. Here in DeBary, we don’t have snow, but we do get rain and humidity. And storing your vehicle outside for long periods will only add to wear and tear and the risk of dents. If you’re storing it up north, then an indoor spot is even more crucial.
Cleanliness is Key
Before you tuck your vehicle away, give it a thorough wash and wax. This removes dirt and grime that can damage the paint over time before they become more than annoyances. Clean the interior too, to prevent any unwelcome pests.
Full Tank, Happy Car
It may sound counterintuitive, but a full tank of gas is better in the long term. This leaves less room for air, which means there won’t be as much moisture to condense and dilute or contaminate the fuel. Also consider adding a fuel stabilizer to the gas so it won’t degrade. If your vehicle is electric, don’t leave it with an empty battery. Charge it to around 80% of its maximum.
Tire Care
If a car sits for too long, flat spots can develop on the tires. If you are worried about this, you can lift the car up on jack stands or slightly overinflate the tires. Just remember to return them to normal pressure before driving again.
Battery Maintenance
The charge of a car battery will slowly decrease over time. To prevent a dead battery, use a battery tender. It keeps the battery at the perfect charge level.
Don’t Forget the Details
Do a final check before you walk away. Close all the windows tightly. Using a car cover can help prevent moisture buildup.
